i guess my point, with regard to the suppression of salvadoran identity, was that it seemed (to me, of course) that was what you were getting at, in terms of what the mother's motives were for wanting her son to use "usted" and not "tú." but, i should clarify that i understand this suppression (as a common experience) as a mechanism for survival in a hostile world. this is very very clear to me.
I understand that. I didn’t address it but I posted a link to an article I thought did that experience more justice. Sorry I get really carried away with language & el salvador. I totally agree and I feel, or I hope at least, that as a people we’re getting to a point where we no longer have to surpress our identities in the US, in mainstream Spanish-language media ect. ‘cause we’re really unique and awesome and everyone should know this.
